By Pam Barby, chair of the graphic design department and faculty member.

[Editor's note: PCA&D routinely invites guest artists to the college so they may present artist talks that are free and open to the public and the entire PCA&D community.  On October 10, Gail Anderson presented her talk in the morning and after lunch, spent several hours in class with design students eager to glean whatever they could from such a well-known designer.  This isn't the first time Gail was introduced to the PCA&D community: she was PCA&D's graduation speaker in May 2011, and you can read more about her here.]

Designer and typographer Gail Anderson put 19 junior and senior graphic designers to work during a collaborative, in-class assignment. In 3.5 hours Gail and the students created a silkscreened poster, a motion graphics piece, and multiple posters celebrating the 30th anniversary of Pennsylvania College of Art & Design.

All were inspired and in awe of the vector woodcut typography she gifted to all of us as well as her most recent publication for the Type Director's Club "Lucky Serif Dream Book."  (Gail wrote and designed the book.)

Gail expressed that she doesn't know what she is going to do in the next chapters of her life, but she sure knew how to excite an entire group of designers for the beginning chapters of their lives.

Thank you, Gail Anderson!

You can view more photos from Gail's session with the students on PCA&D's Facebook page.

Re: Inspiration Creation 101

Gail was fantastic! Honest, raw, and spirited. The guest speakers all of us have been able to corral for PCA&D over the past several years has been truly inspiring. What a great one-on-one classroom experience the students were able to absorb, right? Indeed. Great job, Pam.
