9/17/2013 11:48:00 AM by PCA&D

PCA&D faculty members and students are active in and outside the classroom.

Photography major Kate Frese '14 is again on assignment with Independent Sports magazine. She has been photographing games of the Philadelphia Flyers (National Hockey League) and the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer. Click here and here to see her images; Kate is credited on the site.

Independent Sports magazine is an online publication where Kate interned this past summer, capturing events such as the Philadelphia Soul's championship game and the Major League Lacrosse Championship in Philadelphia. (See that story here.)

Bob McLeod, faculty member in PCA&D's Illustration department and comic artist for Marvel/DC Comics -- Bob's a co-creator of "The New Mutants" for Marvel -- was a featured guest at the New York ComicCon, October 11-13.

Bob is also in the proces of penciling and inking a 20-page job for Marvel to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the X-Men.

Bob was one of PCA&D's talented faculty members who led our students during the 24-Hour Comics Day event, held on October 5 and 6. Read that story here, and about PCA&D's degree program in Illustration.

Mike Hawthorne, faculty member in PCA&D's Illustration department, was part of "100 Miles of Illustration" at The Parliament Gallery in downtown York, Pa. Mike was also an active participant and guest speaker at PCA&D's 24-Hour Comics Day, too. Click here to read that story.

Jordan Baumgarten, adjunct instructor in PCA&D's Photography department, has released "Briar Patch," his first book.

In 2010, Baumgarten and his fiance returned to live in their West Philadelphia neighborhood. "Briar Patch" visually examines the dissonance felt when one's home is a place where you [feel that you] don't belong. The images explore a life and a relationship in the context of an at-times violent neighborhood, and the anxiety of looming violence coming into the home.

Copies of the book went on sale at the New York Art Book Fair at MoMa PS1, and Jordan was recently interviewed about his work by Vice Magazine

Brian Gunzenhauser, assistant professor in the Graphic Design department, recently built a website for the 40th anniversary of NYC-based design group Bernhardt Fudyma (BFDG).  The site has caught the attention of Communications Arts, the industry’s ultimate resource for creative excellence and publisher of an online presence and print magazine.

On September 19, Communications named Brian’s website for BFDG as their “Web Pick” of the day. Such exposure – being recognized by leaders in the industry -- is a real lift for artists and designers.

The home page of Brian's BFDG anniversary site is shown at the top of this news page.

Eric Fowler, instructor in PCA&D's Illustration department, was part of "Small Monsters," a group exhibit at the Entryway Gallery in New York City. The exhibit closed on October 30.

The group exhibit is on display at Lancaster Museum of Art through November 10. Chris's work includes four photographic color pigment prints from her project "The Susquehanna Trail: Road of Never-Ending Delight."

She was recently mentioned in the Philadelphia-area and Lancaster County media about her work.
