Your own window to the world
The understanding of the photographic image is central to understanding
contemporary culture. Documentary and news photographers inform and influence
our grasp of current events; commercial photographers meet the image needs
of business; and fine art photographers help us comprehend culture and society.
As a student of a medium which contributes to both the cultural and economic
aspects of society, you will be well positioned to pursue your art as a
life’s work.
In Pennsylvania College of Art & Design’s BFA photography program, vision (design
sophistication and the ability to see photographically) is of primary importance,
regardless of its application. You will see how craft and vision are inextricably
bound, and will develop strong visual skills and knowledge of traditional,
digital and experimental photographic processes. In addition to learning
current practices, you will also develop attitudes and competencies that
will allow you to meet the challenges of new imaging systems.
Because photographers have a number of options that require knowledge beyond
camera and darkroom skills, the program also emphasizes the importance of
written, verbal and critical thinking skills. A required internship provides
an opportunity to make contacts within the industry and to discover aspects
of photographic practices that correspond with your abilities and interest.
These professional opportunities, in addition to your coursework, will better
prepare you for life after graduation.
The college’s photography facilities provide a solid base for both traditional
and digital photography coursework. Our dark-room, which is equipped with
15 black &
white enlargers, eight color enlargers, and two developing sinks, has just
been enhanced with a 20” wide Fujimoto color processor. Photography students
also have access to the college’s imaging labs with 15 Macintosh workstations
and the most up-to-date imaging software.
