Painting Certificate Program
Pennsylvania College of Art & Design receives numerous requests for help with or the actual execution of murals. These requests come from a variety of sources ranging from individuals who want murals for their homes, to community organizations wishing to beautify their neighborhoods. The college can usually recommend only a handful of local muralists. These artists are certainly not enough to handle the number of requests received. There are numerous painters in the area who could do mural work if they were experienced, encouraged, and networked. Through this series of courses, artists will learn the basic materials and techniques used to create large-scale interior and exterior paintings for any purpose. Artists will also learn how to manage and coordinate a community mural project. Here
are some of the topics students will learn about: image development surface preparation image enlargement selecting paint and materials organizing a community-based mural project Requirements for successful completion of the Mural Painting Certificate Program: submit a Mural Painting Certificate Program application and fee submit a personal statement (250-500 word typed statement that describes your reasons for choosing a visual arts education and any influences that led to this choice) and current resume complete the three required courses achieve an overall 2.0 G.P.A. or better Required Courses: 2 one-credit courses and 1 non-credit workshop (click link for class description) Mural Painting: Methods & Materials Introduction to Mural Painting Coordinating a Mural Project Workshop Students who receive the Mural Painting Certificate are eligible to apply for a listing in the directory of muralists on the Mural Resource Project Web site. Mural Painting: Methods & Materials PTG 197 Monday - Thursday, July 7 - 10, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm 1 elective credit, $395 Location: PCA&D In this course, you will learn to use the basic methods and materials employed in creating interior and exterior murals. Beginning with image development, you will be led step-by-step through the process of producing large-scale paintings. Topics covered in this class include: image development, design, composition, color, perspective, surface assessment and preparation, roughing in the design, corrections, image enlargement, projection, and transferal (grid system). The instructor will also talk about paint, varnishes, uv blocks, proper brushes to use and brush care. The course will culminate in designing and producing a small mural in each students home and producing a mockup of a community mural project. Prerequisite: Proficient painting and drawing skills are assumed and will not be taught in this class. NOTE: To take this class, you must have access to email, a connection to the web, a digital camera, and a scanner. Introduction to Mural PaintingPTG 198 Monday - Thursday, July 14 - 17, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm 1 elective credit, $395 Location: PCA&D In this course, you will design and execute a large-scale acrylic painting. Topics to be discussed include: dealing with the public and clients, the concept of durability versus mural art as a temporary commodity and the implications of a large image in a public place. The range of large paintings in the art world is wide - from personal images to commercial murals. Introducation to Mural Painting teaches you the basic skills that will prepare you to tackle any scale project you may encounter. NOTE: Completion of Mural Painting: Methods & Materials or equivalent experience is required to enroll in this course. Proficient painting and drawing skills are assumed and will not be taught in this class. Coordinating a Mural Project WS 13 Friday, July 11, 9 am - 2:30 pm non-credit, $85 Location: PCA&D Learn how to organize a community-based mural project. This one-day workshop is a must for anyone who is interested in generating a mural project. The instructor will teach you how to get started and walk you through the process of choosing a location, exploring ideas, selecting an artist, deciding on a design, obtaining city and neighborhood approval, and unveiling the mural to the community. Workshop topics include: project development, volunteer coordination and management, funding, grants, supplies, weather, and optimal timing for the project. This workshop is intended to help anyone involved in a mural project save time and money. Artists and non-artists are encouraged to attend. NOTE: Discounts to do apply to this class.
