Painting Professional Program
Through this series of courses at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, artists will learn about the basic materials and techniques used to create large-scale interior and exterior paintings, in addition to learning how to manage and coordinate a community mural project. You may register for courses offered in our Open Studies Program or apply for acceptance to our Mural Professional Program. Here
are some of the topics students will learn about:. image development . surface preparation . image enlargement . selecting paint and materials . organizing a community-based mural project Requirements for successful completion of the Mural Painting Professional Program: . submit a Mural Painting Professional Program application and fee . submit a personal statement and current resume . complete the three required courses . achieve an overall 2.0 average Required Courses: 2 one-credit courses and 1 non-credit workshop (click link for class description) . Mural Painting: Methods & Materials . Introduction to Mural Painting . Coordinating a Mural Project Workshop Students that receive the Mural Painting Certificate are eligible to apply for a listing in the directory of muralists on the Mural Resource Project Web site. Mural Painting: Methods & Materials Monday through Friday, July 12 - July 16 Hours: 9 am - 4 pm 10 sessions, 1 elective credit, $385 This course will introduce students to methods and materials used in creating interior and exterior murals. Beginning with image development, students will be led step-by-step through the process of producing large-scale paintings. Topics covered in this class include: image development, design, composition, color, perspective, surface assessment and preparation, roughing in the design, corrections, image enlargement, projection, and transferal (grid system). The instructor will also talk about paint, varnishes, uv blocks, proper brushes to use and brush care. The course will culminate with each student designing and pro-ducing a mockup of a mural project. NOTE: Proficient painting and drawing skills are assumed and will not be taught in this class. Painting Monday through Friday July 19 - July 23, Hours: 9 am - 4 pm 10 sessions, 1 elective credit, $385 In this course, you will collaborate with other students to design and execute a large-scale acrylic painting for a specific area within the college's 204 North Prince Street building. Topics to be discussed include: dealing with the public and clients, the concept of durability versus mural art as a temporary commodity, and the implications of a large image in a public place. The range of large painting in the art world is wide - from personal image to commercial mural painting - and Introduction to Mural Painting will help prepare you to tackle any scale project you may encounter. NOTE: Completion of Mural Painting: Methods & Materials or equivalent experience is required to enroll in this course. Proficient painting and drawing skills are assumed and will not be taught in this class. Coordinating a Mural Project Monday, July 26 Hours: 10:30 am - 4 pm 1 session, non-credit, $85 Learn how to organize a community-based mural project. This one-day work-shop is a "must" for anyone that has the interest and desire to generate a mural project. The instructor will tell you how to get started and walk you through the process of choosing a location, exploring ideas, selecting an artist, deciding on a design, obtaining city and neighborhood approval, and unveiling the mural to the community. Workshop topics will include: project development, volunteer coordination and management, funding, grants, supplies, weather and optimal timing for the project. This work-shop is loaded with valuable information that is sure to help anyone involved in a mural project save time and money. Artists and non-artists are encouraged to attend.
